This disorients the audience, and allows them to experience the same emotions running through Thomas A. Anderson's veins as the story goes from odd to appalling. They are just as confused as the main character when he gets a mysterious phone call at work, and must attempt a daring escape. Then, during agent Smith's interrogation, they wonder if they are dreaming as his mouth disappears, and an electronic bug burrows through his navel. When the backstory is finally explained, it is one of the greatest moments in science fiction history.
