These economic activities have also been supported by some loans either from the project funds or from micro-credit lending agencies.

The social mobilization program aiming at economic empowerment has been operational in Neelum and Jhelum Valleys of AJK for the last five years. However, no scientific study has been undertaken to assess the impact of the program on the development of the community especially its social mobilization and economic empowerment. This has called for the present study. The specific objectives of the study were as under:

* To see the response of females about the education after being involved in the project.
* To measure the role of females in the family decisions after taking part in the income generations activities.
* To study the contribution of income generated by the activities in health related issues of females and their families.
* To evaluate the level to which social mobilization has contributed in the economic empowerment of women.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study was undertaken in Neelum and Jhelum Valleys of AJK. All the CDG's(24 in number) were included.


To gather the data, an intensive interview schedule was prepared, pretested, and finalized. The records and reports of NJVCDP and allied departments of AJK were also consulted. The CDGs were contacted and the information was also gathered through the group discussions. Conversations were also held with various relevant government officials i.e. Department of Local Government and Rural Development, Social welfare Department, Chief Secretary AJK, the immediate staff of project working in the field. The resource persons were also identified as key informants to get further in-depth information about the activities and programs of the project. The data collected was analyzed and interpreted by using simple frequency distribution and percentages.
